Covers the Earshot Mac app and the Earshot for Google Meet browser extension. Last updated 28 October 2026.
The short version
Everything stays on your Mac. Earshot never records audio, has no servers to send your meetings to, and has no accounts or analytics.
The Mac app
- Audio: Earshot listens to your microphone and the sound your Mac plays only while you have it transcribing. Speech is turned into text on your Mac, in memory, and the sound is thrown away within seconds. Audio is never written to disk or sent anywhere.
- Notes: the text of your meetings is saved as Markdown files in a folder you choose (by default ~/Documents/Earshot). You can delete them at any time.
- Calendar: if you allow it, Earshot reads your upcoming events on your Mac to show them in the menu bar, find their video links, and take the names of the people invited so it can label who is speaking. Nothing is uploaded.
- Voices: when you name a speaker, Earshot keeps a voice fingerprint, a short list of numbers that describes how that voice sounds, together with the name you gave it, so it can recognise the voice in later meetings. It is not audio and can't be played back. It is stored only on your Mac and never uploaded. You can turn this off, or forget one voice or all of them, in Settings → Speakers.
- Cue summaries: when Apple Intelligence is on, summaries are written by Apple's on-device model. Nothing is sent to a cloud service.
The browser extension
- What it reads: on meet.google.com pages only, the participant names, the active speaker, caption text and the meeting title that Google Meet shows on the page, and whether you are still in the call.
- Where it goes: only to the Earshot app on your own computer, at 127.0.0.1. The extension sends nothing to any other address, including ours.
- What it stores: two settings in your browser: the port Earshot listens on, and whether leaving a call stops transcription.
- What it never does: record or read audio or video, read other websites, track your browsing, or sell or share any data.
